Hello, everyone. This is a long shot, but is there anyone here who used to play on Seltani? It was last alive sometime in late 2013.

For those who don't know, Seltani was/is a browser-based MMO game with a D'ni theme where people could build exotic locales to explore using nothing but text, via simple forms, and bring them to life with puzzles if they were inclined to learn the scripting language. Navigation was via links, and one could also chat with other players present, or even shout to the entire server. All this is in fact still possible, but the game has been deserted for five years as of this writing.

Asking because I made some pals at the time, but foolishly didn't ask where else they could be found, and then everyone drifted apart quietly. Or if you check out the place and happen to like it (guest accounts exist), I'd be glad to play guide and/or give more details. Thanks!

Have y'all seen Mystic Places?
Worn books, aged leather, hidden paths, striking vistas, and displaced machinery- an accumulation of images from, inspired by, and relevant to the ages of Myst.

It's absolutely beautiful.
It's Capella again, this time talking about Mysterium 2011. This year it's held in Boston, on the 5th to the 7th of August. More details can be found here, for those who are curious. I know I'm attending, is anyone else?

I wanted to show off some of the event prizes that are going to be given. They can be found on deviantART, both at e-derby's personal gallery and at the myst-fandom collective one.

Shorah! I'm Capella, and [personal profile] rivenwanderer has graciously added me as a co-mod to the community. I'm pleased to meet everyone here.

Today I'd like to talk about Myst Online: Uru Live again, or MO:ULa or just plain Uru Live or Uru if you're lazy like me. I'd like to know who's playing, what their contact info is, and what they like to do in the game.

My avatar's name is Capella, KI #191882, and I'm a member of the MYSTCommunity Bevin.

It's the hood for members of the MC forum, as its name might indicate. We have gatherings every now and then, and if people are interested I can post advance notice here; just because the hood is dominantly for MCers doesn't mean others can't come chill at the gatherings.

I really love seeing D'ni, like many others I imagine. One of my favorite activities is to be in-character. It doesn't get to happen often, but when I can kick back and pretend I'm really doing all of these things with others for a few hours, it's so much fun. There's a few other MCers who like to stay almost totally IC when we gather, and that helps add to it. Plus, there's some fun forum interaction. Over on MC here I made a thread about how the cannen music is following me. This stemmed from a bug I happened to discover, but I managed to spin it in an IC way, and I've had a few people come to my Relto to check it out. One friend has even agreed to play along as though he can't hear it, setting up my IC av to seem a little crazy. It's all good fun.

So, who are you, what are your KIs, what are your hoods, and what do you like to do in-game? Or do you not play MO:ULa, and if not, why not?
Shorah. =) Newcomer here.

I have been recently working on studying the D'ni language. It is a beautiful language to both speak and write having just enough poetry and just enough art to it to make it worth while. Though D'ni is based very much on Hebrew, the two languages have distinct differences.

I guess it is a tad bit of an obsessive thing to do, to learn to speak and write D'ni. But, hey, we're all about making it real, right? ^_^

If you are at all interested in learning to speak D'ni, if you by some chance have never before though of it or cared to put the time in, then I would suggest starting with The D'ni Student, brought to you by the lovely D’ni Linguistic Fellowship.
What other fandom vocabulary has something at least semi-canonically called a "squee"? :D

This time it's not organized by theme, just a kind of "recent Myst art that made me go 'oo!'" thing :)

Pretty things over here! )

That's it for now... oh, also! Myst Online is available to play for free now, and Cyan is working on both getting the engine to be open-source and allowing fan-created content into the game. I've made an account and played through the game content, but I don't tend to sign on a lot now that I've run out of things to do... what about the rest of you?
Yes, really. Deviantart is so wonderful :)

Sorry about the radio silence in this comm lately--I've had a couple of "giant roundup" post ideas percolating in my head but for various reasons I don't think they're going to come to be for a while. I'll hopefully post nifty little tidbits instead. Meanwhile, please feel free to start threads discussing the Myst series or linking to cool things! I'd especially be interested in fanfic recommendations.

Something approaching instructions are available if you click on the image :)

I did this over the course of Saturday while at Mysterium. (Which was so excellent! There was a tour of the Cyan headquarters and everything! *still in fangirl heaven*)

With the necklaces especially, I had to work on several levels to try to make them both strongly reminiscent of the Ages (using the materials I could find) *and* visually interesting to someone who's not that familiar with the games. Kind of like a more extreme version of trying to make my gear jewelry look nice even to people who aren't hugely into steampunk, I suppose :)

This is essentially a really detailed recap of Myst: The Book Of Atrus, interwoven with things meaningful to the artist. You should just go look at it, like, right now. I think it's the most detailed and involved hand-drawn fanart I've seen...
From the Mystlore article on Gehn:

[Gehn] saw himself as the last of a race of gods: whereas Atrus came to believe that writing merely linked to existing worlds, Gehn saw the act of writing as that of creating a world, and thus, ultimately, its people. That he had, as he thought, "created" the worlds of which he wrote gave him, he believed, not only the ability to rule and control them, but the right.

To me, that's a pretty good encapsulation of the colonizing mindset: that the world does not exist until the colonizer "discovers" it, and that the act of discovering it gives him the right to do what he wants with it.

Without further ado, on to the picspam! Remember, most of these are available at higher resolution on deviantart if you click on them :)

More excellent portraiture this way, both serious and silly )

more pictures this way! )
(Should I cut these for the sake of people's reading pages?) cut!

I really like the star fissure--both visually and thematically. I thought that the way it tied together the beginning of Myst with the end of Riven was brilliant :)

(Ideally I'd like to include more discussion in my link roundups, but I'm fighting a cold right now and would rather get things moving than wait until I have the brainpower to come up with more eloquent things to say.)

Comm business: I'm putting some links to good fan resources like MystLore in the links list of this community. I've tweaked the style for the comm a bit as well--please let me know if there's anything that looks weird on someone's computer. Oh, and the comm now has 6 Myst/Riven icons--feel free to use them yourself (with credit to the original creator).

Hi. I want a shiny, cozy, thinky Myst community, and here seems as good a place as any to make one. I'll probably do some link roundups and fanart, myself, but hopefully more discussion can come to be as more people join. I want to see fanfic, philosophy, meta-discussions/analysis, and of course Mystverse humor!

If you find your work linked here and you would like it attributed differently or would like the link taken down, please let me know and I'll make things right.

If you're interested in co-moderating, please let me know!

This community is probably going to focus on the pre-Uru canon unless an Uru-happy mod steps up to help me out. It is almost certainly never going to have an In-Character Uru function.
